Abstract Outline:

The Tonsley Innovation District is a Renewal SA project, created at the premises of the former Mitsubishi car manufacturing plant in Adelaide’s southern suburbs. It is Australia’s first innovation district, combining over thirty businesses and start-ups, leading-edge research and education institutions such as Flinders University and TAFE SA, as well as a residential precinct to provide a high quality, people-focused and knowledge-driven environment.

Enwave has been appointed by Renewal SA to be the primary utility provider for electricity, natural gas, thermal energy (hot and chilled water) and recycled water at Tonsley.

The Tonsley embedded network is a grid connected urban network that will incorporate a large rooftop solar system of 1.7MW initially with the potential to scale up to 5MW as the Tonsley demand grows. There are plans to incorporate battery storage into the embedded network to capture the benefits of solar generation and balance the network demand with the aim of increasing sustainability, improving efficiencies and ultimately lowering the cost of energy for all Tonsley tenants.
