AGL’s Virtual Power Plant in South Australia – learnings and opportunities
Virtual Power Plant in south Australia program manager
AGL’s Virtual Power Plant in South Australia (VPP-SA) program was launched in 2016 and when complete, will include 1,000 smart energy storage systems installed ‘behind the meter’ at residences across metropolitan Adelaide forming a virtual power plant that can act as a dispatchable 5MW solar peaking plant. The purpose of the trial is to determine the multiple services and values that a VPP can provide, and how these services interact in practice. Installations are on track to complete at the end of June 2019, and the VPP is already demonstrating the capability of an orchestrated fleet of smart storage devices.
This talk with provide a summary of the project achievements to date, including a view of the key opportunities and challenges for VPP’s in the existing market. The VPP-SA project is supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency as part of its Advancing Renewables program.
