Overview and modelling of Cost-effective Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems

Jes Donneborg is responsible for driving Aalborg CSP’s growth through project development of Solar Thermal Plants across the globe. He has worked within the solar industry for 15 years developing various solar installation ranging from PV, air collector systems or domestic hot water installations.

Mr Donneborg has worked on senior management level for over 30 years as CFO, CEO, COO in companies in Denmark and in Europe. He was leading the development of the largest supplier of domestic solar thermal solutions in Europe and was instrumental in creating the leading supplier of large-scale solar thermal systems on the biggest market in the world – Denmark.

Focusing on developing companies to grow and gain an important role in their market niche has been a leading element in his carrier working with both start-ups and mature companies setting a broad perspective to creating a success.

Abstract Outline:

The research topic of this paper is twofold; containing an investigation of different types of existing Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems as well as a cost-effective TES system proposal.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate different existing Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage (MS-TES) configurations from both a commercial and a technical point of view. The paper will address the main challenges associated with MS-TES systems and discuss how to overcome said challenges. To ensure a well-illustrated presentation, a collective overview of different MS-TES configurations is provided.

In addition to investigating different types of TES systems, this paper also serves to highlighting the main differences between the two-tank TES system and the single-tank system. A model of a proposed singleTES system will be presented together with the motivation behind the needs of innovation of a MS-TES technology. In this, cost optimization together with advantages and disadvantages from technical and economic perspectives is listed.
