The value available in wholesale electricity markets is a key consideration for utility scale battery projects, and increasingly for aggregated smaller systems as well. In this talk, I will focus on the evolving risks and opportunities in the National Electricity Market. This will include discussion of:
• Real world data on how batteries are performing across the NEM;
• How pricing patterns are evolving in the NEM and the implications for the future of battery storage;
• How key rule changes, such as the five minute settlement rule change, and the wholesale demand response mechanism, may alter the value proposition of battery storage.
